Compex

Before or after exercise: when should you use a Compex massage gun?

There is no single perfect time to use a massage gun. Some people like a brief, gentle session before activity; others prefer one afterwards. What matters is whether it feels comfortable, suits your reason for using it and fits the plan you have been given for an injury.

Before activity

If you use a Compex massage gun as part of a warm-up, keep it light and use it on the relevant muscles according to the device instructions. Then move: easy activity and the movements you are about to practise matter more than a device alone. A massage gun should not be used to push through pain or make an injured joint feel ‘ready’ when it is not.

After activity

After training, gentle use may feel soothing on tired muscles. Start with a comfortable setting, avoid pressing hard and follow the manufacturer’s guidance on duration. Hydration, food, sleep and a sensible training load remain the foundations of recovery.

When rehabilitation changes the answer

After surgery or with a recent muscle, tendon or ligament injury, check with your physiotherapist or clinician before using percussion massage near the affected area. Avoid direct use over joints, bones, bruising, broken skin or a swollen or acutely painful spot. Seek advice if symptoms are unexplained, persistent or worsening.

Let your response guide you

Notice how you feel during and after use. Stop if you experience pain, numbness or increasing irritation. The right routine is one you can use comfortably without masking symptoms that need attention.
